Yu Zhong Bu Tong (鱼众不同) at JEM Level 5 represents an innovative approach to featuring fresh whole fish in a food court setting, bringing farm-to-table dining excellence to shopping mall convenience and affordability. Established in 2020, Yu Zhong Bu Tong pioneered the concept of operating locally-produced live fresh fish in a food court environment, maintaining daily supply through direct partnership with their dedicated fish farm at Lorong Halus Jetty in Pasir Ris. The restaurant name itself cleverly plays with language—"yu zhong bu tong" means "out of the ordinary" in Chinese while incorporating the fish element reflecting their signature focus. Daily fish transportation from farm to kitchen ensures optimal freshness that distinguishes Yu Zhong Bu Tong from competitors relying on frozen or less fresh sources. Operating from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily, Yu Zhong Bu Tong provides accessible dining for lunch breaks, family dinners, and casual occasions throughout the week.
The menu showcases four signature fish soup flavors representing distinct culinary traditions and taste preferences, each priced at an accessible $9.80 per serving. The Spicy Poached (Shui Zhu Yu) delivers numbing and spicy sensations characteristic of Sichuan cuisine, engaging palates seeking bold flavors and aromatic complexity. The Sauerkraut (Suan Cai Yu) combines tender fish with tangy pickled vegetables, offering a perfect balance of acidity and umami that appeals to diverse taste preferences. The Tomato Fish soup provides a lighter, broth-based option with fresh tomato sweetness complementing the delicate fish flavor. The Collagen Fish Soup emphasizes the gelatinous richness that comes from extended simmering of fish bones and flesh, beloved for both taste and traditional health-promoting properties. Each soup includes two customizable add-on ingredients and accompanying rice, allowing diners to personalize their meal experience within the carefully crafted flavor foundations.
Dining at Yu Zhong Bu Tong JEM represents a commitment to fresh, high-quality fish dishes prepared with traditional techniques while maintaining remarkable affordability through food court operational efficiency. The concept proves that exceptional food quality need not demand premium pricing when operational models emphasize direct farm sourcing and simplified presentation. The dedicated fish farm partnership ensures consistency and quality that elevated restaurants cannot match without significantly higher costs. For those seeking authentic fish soup experiences, appreciating fresh seafood flavors, or exploring Chinese culinary traditions, Yu Zhong Bu Tong at JEM delivers remarkable value and genuine quality that transforms fish soup into a celebration of freshness and culinary tradition.
酸菜鱼 is getting really popular in Singapore, there are the famed specialty shop like 太二 or the generalist 川菜 restaurants you find in various communities (especially those that have a 100 items on menu ;)
OK, personality, I don't like this rendition (it's my first and probably last time trying).
For a start, I'm not a fan of their garlicky recipe. The flavour also lacks the punch and distinction of 太二 (that's like 3x the priceof course), I also found the garoupa a tad fishy.
They "lose out" to the experience from those generalist 川菜馆 because you'll get so many other items on those menu to complete the meal.

$13.8 for the suan cai fish, 2 free sides and it comes with rice for free. But if you didn’t want rice, nothing else was given.
Soup is drinkable. Fish is little, no other veg inside.

The fish meat is too little. Only 4-6 pieces. At least should have 4-6 pieces more !
The price is not cheap in such foodcourt. Not recommended!

Portion too small!very very small!
I order one 酸菜鱼,and add extra 2 portion fish,it cost around $24,and the amount of fish just little bit,I asked them, they say they add fish is half portion,so I add 2 portion is their 1 portion, what a ridiculous reason, why menu never write clearly say only half portion ?very disappointed!

Affordable suan cai fish dish in a mall. Been to their flagship store in Orchard, happy to find this in the West.
Fresh fish, 2 free sides, and rice for $13.80. Can’t complain.

5 star for freshness, with clean flavours of rich collagen soup lets the ingredients shine. My first time to this JEM one, been to the other 2 (usually at the Wisma). One word - consistent!
