TAI ER at JEM (unit #B1-04, 50 Jurong Gateway Road, operating Monday-Friday 11:30am-2:00pm and 5:00pm-9:00pm, Saturday-Sunday 11:30am-9:00pm) is a Sichuan cuisine specialist founded in 2015 dedicated to the celebrated signature dish Suancai Yu—pickled fish or "sauerkraut fish"—which has become a global phenomenon. The restaurant's origins trace to a founder lovingly nicknamed "TAI ER" (meaning too silly with loving connotation), whose vision transformed traditional Sichuan cuisine into a modern casual dining experience. Since its 2015 founding, TAI ER has experienced extraordinary expansion to over 500 outlets worldwide, establishing a significant presence across Singapore, Canada, the United States, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and additional markets, demonstrating the universal appeal of authentic Sichuan cuisine and the signature suancai fish dish prepared with unwavering traditional standards.
The signature dish—suancai fish comprising sliced snakehead fish and pickled mustard greens in rich pork bone broth—stands as TAI ER's bestseller, with the restaurant selling 20 million bowls globally annually. Each batch of suancai (sour vegetable/Chinese sauerkraut) is prepared using traditional fermentation methods relying exclusively on pure salt and sugar—never chemical additives—naturally aged in classic clay jars for precisely 23 days under carefully controlled temperature and humidity conditions. This meticulous preparation ensures authentic flavor complexity and distinctive tanginess that distinguishes TAI ER's suancai from commercial variations. The pork bone broth simmers slowly to develop deep, complex flavors that complement the preserved vegetables and fresh fish, creating a harmonious balance of tastes that represents the essence of authentic Sichuan culinary tradition.
Located at JEM's basement level convenient to Jurong East MRT station, TAI ER serves diners seeking authentic Sichuan experiences in a casual, accessible environment. The restaurant accommodates diverse service preferences through dine-in seating, takeaway options, and delivery partnerships via platforms including Deliveroo and FoodPanda. For those seeking genuine Sichuan cuisine featuring the legendary suancai fish prepared using traditional fermentation methods and authentic ingredients, TAI ER at JEM delivers the signature dish that has earned global recognition and continues to captivate taste buds through 20 million bowls sold annually—a testament to the dish's authentic appeal and consistent quality standards maintained across all TAI ER outlets.
Sliced suan cai fish was good, just a bit too oily. Their stir-fried french bean and the sliced meat with green chilli were delicious. Rice was fluffy and great taste 👍!
At first i was quite sceptical about the free flow drinks - Roselle. But after a few sips, it was actually nice! 😅

Signature suan cai yu is too oily for me, I personally prefer a version with a lighter touch. Price point is high but portion size is decent for 2 pax (small), consider getting a big one if it’s for the entire family. Beancurd skin in egg stew is not bad, but the portion size is a little disappointing. Another disappointing factor is that my much anticipated item lotus root soup is not yet available but it’s not stated anywhere, suggest to state upfront before customers attempt to order. Plus point is that you could opt for half bowl rice for half the price, quite thoughtful. Service is pretty prompt and friendly, free-flow roselle tea is a nice touch and refreshing end to a rather greasy meal.

At first, I was drawn in by the concept — the flower tea and the cool, youthful vibe. I had certain expectations, but unfortunately, the experience fell short. It felt more like an ordinary, family-style restaurant.
Their signature dish is the sauerkraut fish, which came garnished with pretty chrysanthemum petals — a nice touch. But overall, the food was average. Nothing stood out enough to get excited about.
If you’re just looking for a fuss-free meal without the effort of cooking, this place might serve the purpose. But personally, I won’t be back.

The fish was generous and tasty but it was very oily and salty. Needed to scoop out the oil and peppercorn.
The cabbage was fresh and crunchy, and the prawn was tasty too
Sadly the outlet only had tea bags instead of the plum slices for the drink

Tai Er at Jem offers a bold and flavorful Sichuan dining experience, best known for its signature Chinese Sauerkraut Fish—a tangy, spicy, and aromatic dish with tender fish and addictive broth. The menu features other standout items like Fragrant Spicy Chicken Cubes and Cold Noodles with Chili Sauce, all delivering rich, balanced flavors. With efficient service and a trendy, modern interior, it’s a great spot for spice lovers seeking a satisfying, mouth-tingling meal. Great service from Jin Rong, will definitely come back again

Tai Er never disappoints! The 酸菜鱼 is the star of the meal – silky fresh fish in a rich, tangy, spicy broth that’s addictive till the last spoonful. The balance of sour pickled vegetables and numbing peppercorns makes it unforgettable. The 虾片辣子鸡 is equally amazing – crispy, juicy chicken tossed with dried chilies, and the shrimp crackers add a fun crunch that keeps you reaching for more. Service was quick, portions are generous, and the flavours are bold and authentic. Perfect spot if you’re craving hearty, flavour-packed Sichuan food!

We were thoroughly impressed by the exceptional service! The staff were attentive, friendly, and professional, exuding great enthusiasm and warmth. I enjoyed watching them work while savoring my dinner.
Food-wise, the 重庆口水鸡 (Chongqing spicy chicken) was a personal favorite, while my friend raved about the 酸菜鱼 (sour vegetable fish). Although the latter wasn't to my taste, the fish was remarkably tender. The 四季豆 (four-season beans) were decent, but the standout was their delicious white rice – I ended up ordering extra rice!
I also appreciated the free-flow tea concept, which added a warm touch to the dining. Overall, we were thoroughly satisfied and will definitely return!

Food not bad but a bit pricey as the portion for the chicken and pork is quite small. The suacai fish portion is sufficient but a bit oily. Long beans are nice. Service was good as the waiters are friendly. Drinks are free flow and the tea were nice. Rice quality was good. Reservation needed for big groups just in case even though it’s not very full

Ordered 酸菜鱼 and enjoyed it very much. Quite generous in the fish pieces, which melts in the mouth. The soup was also very rich and in such big portions that I could pack home to enjoy it a second time! Drinks were free flow. Also highly recommend the lettuce and fried pork strips!

Tried several dishes here, but the Suan La Fish easily stands out as my absolute favourite—hands down the best I’ve had anywhere. Honestly, no other place compares.
Bonus tip: if you’re spending above $120, don’t forget to use the Grab Dine-In promo for a 15% discount—definitely worth it!

I visited Tai Er at JEM recently and was genuinely impressed by both the food and the service. This outlet lives up to the reputation the brand has built around its signature Suan Cai Yu (酸菜鱼), and the experience was made even better thanks to our attentive and friendly server, JR.

First time eating at Tai Er, the stir fried cabbage, fish and surprisingly the white rice was the star of the show. Like that the dishes aren't too oily or heavy. Will come again for sure.

I have to say they have very clever ID concept that make the restaurant very intimate and also fantastic lighting for food shots. First time eating here and very impress with the energetic vibes in the outlet.
Ordered their signature sauerkraut fish, not sure if it’s comparable to other Chinese eateries as I’m not the die hard fans of this dish but its good enough for me to go for 2nd helping.
It helps when u go as a bigger group as we can try more appetizers. However servings for these are not big, so I find the price a bit on the high side especially the beef noodle. At $10 a pop here, Le Nu seems really value for money then.
Oh but they serve one of the best cooked rice I have ever eaten. Something so simple but not always done well in Chinese eateries!
Overall a good dining experience though.

This is my favourite lunch spot for suancai fish (酸菜鱼)🐟 Once u placed the order, it won't take long to serve all the dishes.
The fish slices are so tender & the soup base is slightly sourish but appetising, not forgetting to mention the presentation, sprinkled with yellow flower buds, it definitely whets one's appetite. Especially suited for our hot & humid weather here.
Another bonus point is the free flow drinks (self service) During my last visit, it was roselle flower with orange peel (陈皮)This time they changed it to muscat jasmine tea bags.
I especially like the restaurant ambience, unlike most restaurants, which have bright & glaring lights, Tai Er lightings are really comfortable to dine in. I'm always looking forward to going back for more, & hopefully they can consider changing their menus every season so that we don't have to repeat eating the same dishes 😊

If you're into Mala dishes, this restaurant will set your taste buds on fire, in a good way.
The atmosphere is great for family gatherings. They even offer free, fresh aromatic tea.
Dishes arrive faster than at any fast food joint nowadays, and the waitstaff provides excellent service.
The food is exceptionally authentic; it's as if the essence of Sichuan has been brought right to your table. It's a spicy, flavorful journey you won't forget.
